Ian Taylor

Bio

Ian has a degree in Physics and a PhD in Applied Physics/Electronics.

He joined Shell Research in 1991, initially in the Mathematical Modelling Group, where he developed models to predict the oil film thickness, and friction losses between moving machinery parts (such as piston rings, bearings & valve trains). In 1994 he moved into the Lubricants research group, where he stayed until he left Shell in 2020. He had varied roles within Shell, including being the Global Technology Manager for Shell’s Lubrication Science team from 2006 to 2012. His research mainly focused on energy efficient lubricants, and he also managed Shell’s various University research links in tribology (the science of friction and wear) from the mid 1990’s to 2020, working closely with various UK, US and Chinese Universities.

Ian was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Central Lancashire in 2020 where is continued to pursue research on mixed and boundary lubrication.

Ian is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and of the STLE. He received the Tribology Silver Medal from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 2020.
